Patient FAQs
-
How much time will I need off after surgery?
The convalescence period will vary depending on the type of procedure and the amount of post-operative medication needed. The later tends to vary greatly between patients. In general, most patients can resume light exercise about 2 weeks after surgery. Vigorous activities, such as lifting weights, skiing, etc. typically require about 2-3 mos. All patient s are given detailed instructions prior to surgery so they can be well prepared for the post-operative period.

Why is cigarette smoking detrimental?
Smoking interferes with the body’s healing process and also makes the administration of general anesthesia more difficult. Lifting procedures (tummy tucks, breast lifts and facelifts, etc.) can result in skin separation and poor wound healing due to compromised blood flow from tobacco. The overall healing process is generally slower and the final scars may be inferior in patients who smoke. Patients are strongly encouraged to stop smoking for at least one month before and after surgery to minimize the ill-effects of smoking.

Are there any medications I need to avoid before surgery?
Yes. Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and other NSAID medications (Alleve) can cause excessive bleeding and should be discontinued at least 7-10 days before your procedure.
